Club Kombi - Installment 9 (2007) - Sign writing

The kombi was returned to Rob's so he could spend a bit of idle time finishing the roof liner. The end result: absolutely brilliant.

With that work complete the van was delivered to Kruger Signs. Jon Kruger managed to fit in some time between working on some major projects to start working on the sign writing, ably assisted by Rob Brown.

Jon's aim was to come up with a design which was historically accurate. So no computers were to be used at all. Rob and Jon both learned sign writing in the days when it was all done by hand so know how to handle a brush. Although both spend more time on computers nowadays, getting back onto a brush was an enjoyable challenge. Seems though, that its a bit like riding a bike - once you learn you never forget.

The club logo and club name now adorn both sides of the van. The "eagle" wears a coat of gold and has a genuine smile on his face. The rear tail gate has the club name and the web site address. After a bit if trialling with various scripts and colours, the guys settled on gold script with a black drop shadow for the web site address.

And, just in case you are interested, what does it take to re-build a 1955 Kombi? Well a hellof a lot of time, massive amounts of volunteer labour; a group of people who are willing to let their own projects languish while the lavish the time on the club car and, most importantly, we reckon at least 72 dozen Coopers pale Ales for a start. Well thats how many were taken away from North East Powder Coaters during the 3 years that the van spent there. We've lost count of how many were consumed before and after then. We like to say "This car was hand built with Coopers", thanks Dr Tim.
