Club Kombi - Installment 1 (2000)

The idea of a Club Kombi van originated in 2000 when I (Andrew Edwards) found a "Dove Blue" '55 Panel Van at Peterborough. At the time I didn't want another project car and decided it would have a good home as the Club Kombi. When the time came to pick it up it was decided that the bodywork would need too much work. The van was still towed home, but the hunt was on for another one.

Jon Kruger, Shane Hinton and myself went wandering one weekend with the hope of getting Club Kombi II. When we got there to pick the van up it turned out to be a window van, and a bad one at that! (This was 400 km from Adelaide!) We came home very disappointed, and empty trailered! Club Kombi III was another van I knew of and I set off to pick it up (just past Orroroo). On the way I blew 5 car trailer tyres and it turned out to be a fairly tedious trip. It's now home awaiting closer inspection for suitability as the official "Club Kombi". It's a March 1955 Double Door Panel Van, originally Dove Blue (now faded pink!). Thanks go to Kim John at Jamestown for donating the van. His assistance over the weekend was much appreciated.

What we are trying to achieve is a van that displays our club logo can transport barbecues and drinks and can be an eye-catching advertising board on wheels. Any suggestions, offers of labour, or parts when needed will certainly keep the project moving forward.

More on the Club Kombi soon so stay tuned!!

Note: in this time the kombi was stripped of all its bright ware. It was then taken to the bead blaster, where it was shot back to bare metal and coated in metal primer. Work commenced on cutting out rusted sections. Read on for more details.....

Web Master Note: This page is from an article which was printed in the club magazine in 2000. It shows the original intent of the project: to create a flagship for the club, one which could be used as the lead vehicle in club runs and would provide storage for many of the club's assets.
