Roy's
love for the VW began at 16 years of age from his early days of
driving. His first VW was a 1956 oval beetle with which he started
to modify. One time Club Treasurer, John Jansen soon painted front
bonnet "Black-Outs" and this car became instantly recognisable in
the 60's with the addition of larger and wider 15" Ford Customline
tyres and very noisy extractors.
From this start Roy has owned far too many VW's to mention, some
of them being: a type 4 Variant, Australian Factory production Country
Buggy, Eureka Kit Car, Formula Vee, Off Road Sedans and Buggies,
Split Window Beetle, Karmann Ghia and Cabriolet, many type 2's,
3's and even a Porsche 912 etc and the list just goes on.
Roy became a self taught VW mechanic and information "GURU", helping
many VW Enthusiasts with their projects with an expertise that quite
a lot of mechanics at the time lacked. He was a gentle giant who
spent all his spare time in one way or the other with the love of
his life- his VW Interests- obtaining many trophies and awards for
car shows and off road racing. Any one who was a VW Enthusiast knew
and respected Roy receiving encouragement and exchanging information
as encounters often lasted many hours.
Roy passed away from a heart attack late on 5th January 1992 whilst
driving a Volkswagen Type 2. He is sadly missed by those who knew
and loved him and we are personally proud to have him acknowledged
as our No. 1 Club Member. I would also go as far as saying that
at least 75% of our Club members & families were either personal
friends or acquaintances and we are all very proud to carry the
memories of Roy Williams, a true VW Legend.
