Volks Fest 2000

Volks Fest Bonython Park

First activity for the weekend was the Cruise Night on Friday 5th, kicking off from Plane Tree Drive. Saturday 4th was the Club Dinner at Schmitty's Restaurant. Projector screens were set up so members could watch their favourite VW movies and footage. Then came the Festival on Sat 6th.

Bonython Park

As a newcomer to the Club, this was my first Festival. Helpers congregated early to get the grounds ready and were soon joined by the first traders who had trekked over from Sydney with a load of VW goodies. Seemed like no time at all and the grounds were ready and all non VW's removed from the patch. The weather was splendid - clear blue skies and plenty of warmth.

The Cars

Just when you think you have seen every type of VW produced, some one pulls out another. This time out it was Andrew Edwards with a vintage Matador. There were plenty of us who had seen them over the years but never connected them to their VW heritage. The Matadors were produced between 1949 and 1952 as 1/2 and 3/4 ton delivery vans and trucks. The 1100cc 25hp engine was mid mounted and drove the front wheels.

Another favourite on the day was the Single Cab Bay Ute driven by Jeff Sabel from Banana Boys. This ute is used as a daily driver and promotional vehicle for the business. For the Festival, it was used as a food stall, selling fresh fruit to the hungry crowd.
