Volks Fest 2003

Colley Reserve Gets Another Taste of Volks Enthusiasm
2003 marked the second year of Volks Fest at Colley Reserve, Glenelg.

The festival started off on Friday night with dinner at the Maylands Hotel. This was well attended, with the soup being a highlight of the menu. David Gluyas delivered a multimedia presentation he had prepared on VW's and the assembled throng really appreciated the show.

Saturday afternoon at 3:00 was the nominated time for assembly at City Dismantlers for a cruse to AIR for the drags. There was a great assembly of VW road cars and trailer borne race cars. A highlight for the assembled crowd was the arrival of James Constable from Melbourne with his super hot Type 3 fastback. The work James had put into his roll cage and gearbox support impressed everyone who checked out the car. A real surprise was the visit from the Red Bull crew in their modified New Beetle. The rear windows of this bug have been hinged up to allow quick access to the cans of cool drink held in the back. The over sized Red Bull can on the rear certainly made it stand out. As a bonus the Red Bull crew joined the convoy to the drags and continued to give out promotional drinks through the evening.

The night's activities kicked off well with VW's showing well in the heats. Kurt Janda pulled out in his wife's Subaru WRX engined Transporter and showed just how fast you can make a box on wheels. Pitched against a V8 Falcon, he ran a 16.1 with the strong head wind giving him an obvious handicap. Tom Laube and Adam DeBiasi ran their fastest times to date: 11.6 for Tom in the Frog and 12.2 for Adam's turbo beetle. Keith Poole and Barry Lord battled it out for the Karmann Ghia prize - both running times of around 20 seconds. Michael Clark came out in his Blue Baja and David Gluyas gave a great display in his cherry red beetle.

Just as things started to get heated, down came the rain, forcing an early cancellation to the programme.

Sunday morning the skies had cleared and there was no sign of rain. While the grounds were being prepared, the Club Kombi was delivered and put on display by the tireless Kombi crew. The day was a resounding success: the band kept the crowd rocking, the VolksCafe kept everyone fed and watered, club merchandise sold like the proverbial hot cakes.

There were plenty of new cars and old favourites on display. Roy McDonald impressed with his blue single cab ute, as did Brendan Staples with his beetle. After troubles getting his beetle started - and later getting it to stop - Jon Kruger picked up the Roy Williams trophy and Best Modified Concourse trophy for his retro look charcoal beetle. DeBiasi Auto Repairs showed their single cab split window Kombi ute. Although meant to be Dove Blue, a mis-tint gave this car a real stand out colour. Ian Poynter received plenty of enquiries from people interested in the new buggies he has started building. Paul Robert's beetle also proved a head turner.

Thanks

A big thanks to everyone at the Festival - whether there as a visitor, a member, a trader or displaying their pride and joy. The hard work put in certainly gets a pay back from the buzz of seeing it all come together. Each year the Festival continues to amaze the organisers as it moves from strength to strength
