  VolksFest - Ten Years On

26th November 2006

VolksFest 2006 came around all too quickly - where did the year go??? 2006 marked the 10th year for the Volks Enthusiasts Club of SA. Following the success of the 10th anniversary dinner, the club was keen to make VolksFest 2006 an event to remember.

The Festival week-end kicked off with q twilight cruise on Friday November 24th. This run was well attended and gave people a chance to sort out tether cars before taking them to the show and shine.

As the Club President put it so well, "The preparation and lead up to VolksFest was the usual hectic affair. Plus the usual logistics problems of how to shift all the bits and pieces from various locations and in which vehicles and trailers."

The task of getting the Club Kombi to the venue was made much easier this year, owing to the fact that the "Dove Blue Type 2" actually drove itself on and off the car trailer - ably piloted by Rob Gilbert, project manager for the restoration. The look on his face as he did a lap of honour after unloading her was absolutely priceless - like a kid in a lolly shop!!

A separate sub-committee had got to work early mapping out the ground layout & organising the ground layout. This made preparation non the day much easier. The call for volunteers had gone out well in advance & there was no shortage of helpers for the day: marshalls, cafe, club tent, judging, raffle sellers. A special note of thanks goes to Colin Curtis from VW Club of SA, who arrived early and joined the set up crew.

As well as the band, which has proven a real winner, this year we had an ice cream van and a troupe of "Monster Cars"; the Monster Cars are electric miniature cars for children to ride on and proved a real hit. Even though logistics at Wigley Reserve can be trying, the number of casual visitors which the site - and these extra activities - brings, makes the site a favourite with our club and many others.

Unlike 2005, the weather for 2006 was perfect from the start - no threat of rain at all. One of the best feelings is the one you get when you have finished setting up and the cars start to roll in : suddenly the fatigue and worry are forgotten and replaced by joy at hearing those flat fours rumbling in. By the time the gates were closed, there were 116 official entries - a fabulous result.

The Cars

That collection included Formula Vees, Purvis Eurekas (the Purvis Eureka Car Club seems to get bigger each year), trikes and a Porsche 356.

The Rat Look is a scene which has grown rapidly in the lazy couple of years. Its a great category as it allows people who want a car to drive rather than to show, to bring their favourite car out for the day so the rest of us can enjoy it.

That's not to detract from the show cars: its all about being able to do what you want in the VW scene. I constantly admire the patience and pride of workmanship that goes into the show cars. Its great that the owners can get the covers off them a couple of times a year and bring them out for the rest of us to ogle at.

It was good to see some old favourites back in town. Matt's Dark Blue Splittie was back in town; this time wearing a set of orange stripes and EMPI logos - super cool. Engine work seems to get more high tech each year; especially as people plumb in turbo-chargers. Then to contrast all that chrome and pipe work, right next to it will be a bog standard car, resplendent with period accessories.

Before you know it, the day is over and its time to pack up again. Not sure if its because the committee have been doing it together for a while or whether there was just more helpers, but pack up went smoothly and didn't seem to take much time at all. In the spirit of ongoing co-operation between the VEC & VW Club of SA, their executive joined us for a couple of beers in the St Leonards Inn when packup was finished. This provided a great opportunity to share the lessons learnt on the day: what had worked and what hadn't; what else needed to be done in advance, etc. All things that would help them with Day of the VW in early 2007.

A terrific bonus for the day was the presence of a photographer & journo from VW Magazine of Australia; they joined us for the day to collect pics and stories for an upcoming edition (see VMWA back-issues).

Trophy Winners

The judging panel had set out their criteria well in advance & saved themselves lots of discussion on the day. Congratulations go to the trophy winners who certainly deserved their awards. Special mention needs to be made for the Roy Williams Trophy Winner, Adam DeBiasi. Adam & Dean Hosking had entered Adam's Green Beetle in the Classic Adelaide and came away with 6th Overall. An absolutely incredible result, considering they were up against teams who had hundreds of thousands of dollars to throw at the event. Adam has learned lots of lessons about setting up a car for the road, rather than the quarter mile strip, and will hopefully apply these to great effect for next years run!!
