VolksFest - 2007 |
|
| |
18th
November 2007
The lead up to VolksFest
2007 was marked by a spell of hot dry weather. Fortunately for us
though, the weather cooled down enough to ensure the day was still
comfortable.
For the first time ever, the
Club Kombi drove to the event under its own steam: no more loading it
up at 6:30 am on to a trailer, unloading on the site and then reversing
it all 12 hours later. This year the van was loaded up with all the
club merchandise, BBQ, gas bottles, flags etc and (with suspension
sagging under the load) piloted to Wiggley Reserve. In a 1500cc Kombi
with a full load, its never going to be a fast trip but, now the van is
resplendent in its club livery, the sedate pace gives you more time to
enjoy the admiring glances from fellow road users.

Our regular band, Black Cat Bone headed up the
entertainment bill for the day. They played great R&B all day and
seemed to enjoy themselves as much as the patrons watching. The monster
car rides proved a hit with the kids again and the ice cream van did a
roaring trade in the warm sunshine.
The overall number of cars was down on 2006 but
that can be attributed to a few owners deciding not to brave the
forecast hot weather. All up we still managed over 110 cars on the
strip. In addition to the crop of regulars with their cars, we were
joined by a number of new cars, making their first public showing.

The Cars
One stand out for the
day was the fabulous yellow oval brought down for the day from Whyalla.
Gary, the owner brought it down along with a matching New Beetle run by
his wife. The Oval represents a perfect blend of old school and new:
classic oval lines, brilliant yellow paint job, 19" rims, 4 wheel disks
and, to top it all of, a sweet 2.7 litre type 4 motor. This has to be
one of the best examples of old-new school around.
Fresh from its rigors at the Warwick Drags was Barry's Ascort. The
Ascort is regarded as the Australian kit car which was just too god for
the market. With high quality fibreglass body moulds, a VW floor pan
and a fully moulded dash, the Ascort was streets ahead of all the other
kit cars. However they never made it to full production and only a
handful of cars remain to this day. Barry's car became famous during
the Warwick meet when, during a full throttle take off from the line,
the body flexed and popped out the back window. In what is sure to be a
very uncommon event the car was joined by a second, fully restored
model. It is highly unlikely to see any of these cars at all let alone
to see two together.
Split Window Kombi numbers were down on 2006 but that was more than
made up for by the quality of the cars present. One that really caught
everyone's eye was a beautiful two tone blue camper that took out best
in class.
Accessories make a larger part of personalising your ride as each year
goes by. Mirrors and bud vases caught our eye this year. In a welcome
change from mirrors on the door hinges, these two Type 1's had them
clipped to the door frame.
Once again we had some very welcome visitors: the Formula Vee Club and
Purvis Eureka Car Club are particularly welcome. The trike community
too
can be relied on to always draw a crowd. The Lord's Manor Builders work
van looked great; resplendent with a new tip tray built for them by
Unique fabrications.

Thanks must go out once again to Craig
Hughes and the team from VW Magazine of Australia who made the trip
over for the day. Its great to see that the publishers of this great
mag don't think that the VW world stops once you cross the Great
Divide. The VWMA trade stand proved a popular stop for visitors
to
look at back issues and chat about their personal VW story. The VMWA
photographer took plenty of shots and organised a couple of follow up
shoots with members. To Rob's great pleasure, one of these included a
session with the Club Kombi.

Trophy Winners
Once again the judges did a stirling job
of visiting all the cars entered into prize categories and giving them
the once over. Congratulations go to the trophy winners who certainly
deserved their awards.
(My apologies to sponsors and trophy winners - I hope to have details
posted on the site any day now...)

Thanks
The Volks Enthusiasts Club
of SA cordially thanks its sponsors, without whom the event could not
be held. Members are encouraged to check out the companies listed above
and patronise their business when ever possible. Special thanks also to
the committee and office bearers for their tireless efforts in putting
the show together and to all who brought their cars along - both local
and interstate.
