November 2009 - Todd St Port Adelaide
Those
who joined us at Port Adelaide in 2008 would have seen first hand how
well the new venue worked. In the months following the 2008 event, the
VolksFest sub-committee set out to learn from the lessons of the
inaugural event with the aim of making the 2009 event even better.
The start of November was marked by 2 weeks of extremely hot weather.
Fortunately for the VEC, the heat was then replaced by cool and wet
weather. So rather than fear a baking 40 plus day, club members were
more worried about being rained out! After attracting a record of
around 130 cars in 2008, the only worry was the rain would keep a
lot of cars home.

The core group of
helpers, assembling on Todd St at 7:30 am, found themselves sheltering
from an early morning shower. Nerves were soon soothed, as the rain
stopped and the cloud cover broke to reveal what would be the pattern
for the day: cool breeze, clouds, but still enough sun to burn
unprotected skin. Within and hour and a half the club tent, merchandise
display and cafe were set up and ready. An early morning power blackout
had everyone worried about the band - Black Cat Bone - having to play
acoustic sets, but power was restored just before the official opening
time.
Following congestion at the entry point to the ground in 2008, the
committee had moved the entrance to Jubilee St, which starts alongside
Todd St on St Vincent St then arcs back in to join Todd St two thirds
along its length. This gave Marshalls a huge, safe area for cars to
gather while they waited to pay their entry fees and collect their
goodies bag. Much smoother and safer for all.

The Cafe proved
a hit, with temperatures in the range where both hot food and cold
drinks sell well. As the Coffee Machine which the club had been able to
borrow for previous festivals was no longer available, ever faithful
Barrister, Richard, managed to get the club a line on a cafe quality,
second hand unit. This proved to be an excellent decision and the
machine was given a thorough workout during the day, keeping Richard
very busy. The verdict? An excellent club asset and sure makes a good
coffee.
As is the pattern for VolksFest, a number of newly finished cars make
their debut. This year's standout was the Volks-Rod of Rob B. After 7
years in the making, this car is really world class. See the feature on
this car in the Projects section for more details. Unlike most rods,
which are
just cobbled together, this car is a work of art, with everything
designed to fit seamlessly together. The end result is truly
magnificent and a credit to its owner and the build team from Uniqe
Fabrications.
Plenty of other cars grabbed the eye too: Guy brought along his very
low mileage Country Buggy (500km). Verry ratty but probably the most
complete and original CB around. It contrasted quite strongly with a
near neighbour - a worked over Thing which has been purchased by a club
memebr from its previous owner in Tassie.
The local cars were joined by a crew from Victoria, who braved the 40
knot winds and streaming rain to drive their Kombies and T3 across for
the weekend. A number of club members kept them entertained prior to
the festival and joined them in an impromptou cruise form teh southern
suburbs to the Port. Their efforts were certainly rewarded with a
number of the cars taking out trophies.
The event was also well supported by traders, with a great mix of
private sellers and professionals combining to offer a great range of
parts and accessories. The crew from Wolfsberg Automotive once again
made the trip from Melbourne and continue to astonish with the range of
parts they cram in to their van. A newcomer this year was a trader
selling fibreglass Porsche 356 replica bidy shels - bound to be a hit
especially as the real thing gets more and more expensive.

The street layout
means that once cars enter for the day, there is no option to leave
early. A side benefit is that all the cars stay on display for the
whole day. Just as in 2008, when it came time to leave, good manners
prevailed and the depature was smoothe, polite and orderly. Well done
to all.
Even though everyone was weary, there were plenty of hands still around
to clean up at the end of the day. The proximity of a couple of Pubs
means that the reward for helping is not far away. All the helpers sat
around outside the Port Dock Hotel for a well earned drink and those
with no other plans, stayed on for dinner.
VolksFest 2009 proved an incredible success in all aspects - number of
cars, variety of cars, number of spectators, atmosphere and, of course
as a fund raiser for the club.

Trophy Winners
Once again the judges had a difficult task
picking winners for the various trophies. On hand to give out the
trophies was Port Adelaide Enfield Mayor, Gary Johansen, who is a keen
supporter of car clubs and a member of the VEC (he even brought along
his buggy for the day). Gary's backing for the event has been a key
contributor to the success of the new venue and we hope that his
efforts are rewarded by many other clubs taking advantage, not just of
this excellent venue, but of the unmatched support which the council
offers.

Thanks
The Volks Enthusiasts Club
of SA cordially thanks its sponsors, without whom the event could not
be held. Members are encouraged to check out the companies listed above
and patronise their business when ever possible. Special thanks also to
the committee and office bearers for their tireless efforts in putting
the show together and to all who brought their cars along - both local
and interstate.
Thanks must also go to Ben Stacey who
provided the photos. If your car is missing, please accept our
apologies. If you send us an email (and a pic) we will post it for you.
