Cal Look Cruise - April 2005

On the 10th April 2005, the Volks Enthusiasts Club of SA held its inaugural "Cal Look Cruise". As with its other themed runs, this event turned out to be a fabulous success.
The aim of the cruise was to celebrate 30 years of the Californian Look, which was first described on the cover of "Dune Buggies and Hot VW's" magazine in February 1975. Our target - to get Adelaide's best Hot VW's out for a run together. And it worked: some of the cars and their respective owners had not been seen out and about for some time. The result - massive doses of Volks Enthusiasm.
The run started form our regular take off point at Plane Tree Dve, but not without a bit of challenge. The local police had set up a Random Breath Testing station at the exit from the Car Park. After a discussion with the constabulary - and confirming that no drivers had been drinking - they agreed to let the line of around 30 Volkswagens through and out onto Hackney Rd. Unfortunately it did not end up that easy. The sight of so many good looking modified cars passing by was too much and some of the boys in blue present could not help themselves - a couple of the club's best cars were singled out for attention (i.e. defect notices). If you drive a hard core Cal Looker in this State, the you can expect to receive such attention! Another way to look at it is to go back to the afore mentioned Hot VW's magazine: what was on its cover? A shot of Greg Aaronson being booked by a California Highway Patrol officer! In 30 years, some things have not changed.
The run was designed as a short cruise - mainly to help protect some of the hotter big bore motors! The route ran around the back of the parklands and on to Rundle Street, just to show off a bit to the Cafe set. Mission accomplished - they really turned some heads. The exhaust notes in eh confined area was also a thing of beauty. Then down Grenfell St, Currie St, Henley Beach Rd and on to Tapley's Hill Rd before heading back up to Bradman Drive. The setting drew immediate parallels with the original Californian scene - long straight roads, businesses and industrial parks every where and a dead flat landscape.
The run finished at Billy Baxter's Cafe, where owners Mark and Margaret had reserved the car parking area beside the restaurant for eh club. What a sight - the front row, with its superb looking VW's reminded those present of images of the DKP club sessions at the Dairy Queen in Antiem.
The twilight setting for the run proved a real winner. Dinner at Billy Baxter's was a real success and gave those present to chat and tell tall stories about their cars. Proceeds from the run are being put to the Club Kombi restoration project. The event was such a hit that it is now on the calendar to stay. Thanks to all who helped organise the event.
